In a January 13, 1984 proclamation, President Ronald Reagan designated January 22, 1984 as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day. The date was chosen to coincide with the 11th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case that first recognized the constitutionally-protected status of abortion in the United States.

Reagan issued the proclamation annually thereafter, designating Sanctity of Human Life Day to be the third Sunday in January, which represents the closest Sunday to the original January 22 date. His successor, George H. W. Bush, continued the annual proclamation throughout his presidency Bush's successor, Bill Clinton, discontinued the practice throughout his eight years in office, but Bush's son and Clinton's successor, George W. Bush, resumed the proclamation, and did so every year of his presidency.

I'm certain that we will not see our current president make such a proclamation but it is interesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a new measure that bans the advertising of abortion according to an article written by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com.

The article reads: "Russia's Federal Law on Advertising now includes the ban on advertising abortions and several restrictions concerning the advertising of traditional medical practices. In addition, the changes outlaw advertising campaigns which include free drug samples if these samples contain narcotic or psychotropic substances."

Abortions are legal in Russian and have been since Soviet times, but currently centrist-conservative lawmakers want to limit or completely ban such practices saying it is partly responsible for the country's dwindling population. Putin has taken major measures to try to restrict abortions. In 2003, he implemented the first restrictions on abortion in Russian in almost 50 years, limiting abortions to within 12 weeks of gestation. Exemptions were allowed only for rape or the imprisonment, death, or severe disability of the husband. Remarkably, Putin's Russia has even gone so far as to initiate a National Fertility Day, aimed at getting the culture to produce more Russians.

It's a very sad day when the United States can look at the Russians and see more of a moral conscience toward the unborn. While the Russians are doing what they can to encourage life at every turn our country is doing everything that it can to destroy life. Every year our government gives over $487 million dollars of our tax payer's money to Planned Parenthood. Money that is used to not only used take the life of the unborn but it leaves a wake of destruction in its path that has caused tremendous damage to the American family. Our news media no longer sees it news worthy to report on Doctors like Kermit Gosnell who was found guilty of killing babies outside their mothers' wombs. Feminist organizations keep silent about the disgusting treatment and conditions of abortions clinics all over our country for the sake of "the right to choose". May God forgive us and have mercy on us for what we have become!

Healing Hearts has worked for the past twenty five years to heal and mend the lives that have been devastated by abortion. Although we can't compete with the 487 million dollars that Planned Parenthood gets every year to create the problem we have an amazing God who goes before us and helps us bind up those lives that have been damaged. Women and men all over the world are finding salvation and healing through our ministry and families are being restored.

Will you please join us the week of January 19-25 to set aside to pray for our country, the unborn and for all those men and women in our country who need hope and healing that can only be found in Jesus Christ? Children are a blessing from God. We need to ask God to break our hearts in the same way that abortion breaks His.
