Dear Friend,
I want to thank all of you for your prayers and financial support for Cindy, Maya, Ruth and I as we traveled to Lima, Peru to minister. It seems like the warfare started for Ruth and Maya right after our mission's meeting at our Healing Hearts Conference, and it hit Cindy and I as we were ready to leave the U.S. on Wednesday, January 30th. A freak storm in Atlanta caused us to miss the only flight out of Atlanta that day, the flight leaving the following day was full, so they rebooked us on a flight leaving Friday. This caused us to have to reschedule everything. I was scheduled to speak at the Pregnancy Center conference Saturday morning, so if all went well I would still be able to keep that commitment.
We finally boarded our flight on Friday evening and were so glad to be on our way, not having a clue what was ahead. We landed in Lima around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning and right away found our taxi driver who was holding a sign in the airport waiting area. When we got outside, loaded our luggage and started to leave, the police approached our driver because he had been illegally parked. After about 30 minutes of discussion and chaos, they finally gave him a ticket and we were on our way to the hotel, which was about 30 minutes away. We arrived at the hotel about 2:15 a.m., only to discover somehow our room reservation had been cancelled and there were no rooms available. They didn't speak English, Cindy spoke just a bit of Spanish, and it was now 2:30 a.m. We tried to call contacts from the Pregnancy Resource Center but no one was answering their phones at that time in the morning, and I don't blame them. We were exhausted and had no idea what the schedule was for the conference that day and when we would be speaking. It was a pretty intense scene.
At one point our cab driver, who worked for a Christian transport company, called his dispatch and asked them to contact the person who hired him to pick us up; that person happened to one of our contacts for the Pregnancy Resource Center. Doris came right away to get us and made arrangements for us to stay with one of the ladies at the PRC for that evening. She readjusted the speaking schedule so that I would not have to speak at 9 a.m. so we could get some sleep. They rescheduled me for 11:00 a.m. By the time we got settled and in bed it was well after 3:00 a.m. and we were both praying, "Lord help us get through the day." We knew that if our part of the Pregnancy Center conference was going to be successful, God was going to have to show up for sure. Cindy and I each did two presentations that day. There were around 100 ladies and a few men present. I was truly caught off guard when all of the ladies who had gone through the Healing Hearts Bible studies lined up so that I could autograph their studies. It made me cry. I wasn't prepared for that. I felt humbled that God would allow me to experience such a thing.
It was such a blessing to be able to spend time with the ladies who had completed the Healing Hearts studies and were now working with the Pregnancy Center to be trained as leaders. Prior to our arrival, the pregnancy center announced that they would be doing the Healing Hearts study and over 30 women signed up. God is truly at work drawing women in Lima to the Pregnancy Center so that they can be healed. I'm so thankful for Evelyn Stone and her team who have worked very hard to help us prepare our Spanish materials for publication. Many Spanish-speaking women in the U.S. and in South America will be helped because of their hard work and dedication. It was a very busy day for us and when 4:00 p.m. rolled around we were both ready to go to our hotel, where we now had a room, to get a good night's sleep. Because of the delay in our flight, our time with the Pregnancy Center volunteers was cut short and it was hard to say good-by.
It was time to prepare for the next leg of the mission, a pastor's wives retreat to be held the following Wednesday. Ruth Vargas (Healing Hearts leader from Peru) and I shared about the pastor's wives retreat at the Calvary Chapel Sunday morning service. The pastor there is so supportive and excited about the ministry. God blessed us with a few days of down time at the retreat location before the ladies came on Wednesday. We had a total of 13 pastor's wives at the retreat. Four of those ladies were from the Amazon jungle. They were so precious. Several of them were only in their mid-twenties and have been put in the position of being a senior pastor's wife. The ladies were reserved at first until we got to know them better and then, with the help of God's Word, the walls started to come down. Ruth and Maya are incredibly gifted ministers and interpreters. It truly was a blessing for me to be able to serve the Lord alongside them. It was amazing to see them in action ministering to these ladies and building relationships. I know Jesus looked down and smiled upon them. They were even amazed at how the ladies opened up and started to share. Two admitted to having had an abortion and several had been sexually abused. I'm sure there is much we don't know, but God does and He loves those ladies and wants to see them set free.
At the very end of our time together we gave them each a heart necklace and I did a short devotional on the Ebenezer stone, emphasizing that the necklaces would be their Ebenezer to remember the beginning of their time of restoration. They were so excited and blessed by the necklaces and what they represented. Our whole time together with them was truly anointed by God.
All of them said they wanted to go through one of the Healing Hearts studies, but now the real test comes in getting them signed on to our e-ministry and following through. Please join us as we pray for this. My hope and prayer is that when we go back, we are able to train every one of those ladies to be leaders. I know it is a high and lofty goal, yet each of these women has the potential to reach hundreds of women in their communities for Jesus. To God be the glory!
Please also pray for Evelyn and her team at the Pregnancy Center as they minister to the women in their church and community using the Healing Hearts Bible studies. Pray that God would bless the work of their hands and that there would continue to be much fruit.
Thank you once again for your prayers and your financial support. Lives are being touched and changed for the glory of God.
In His Love,
International Director
