In our September prayer letter we shared with you our vision of creating a youth division for Healing Hearts Ministries. Camille Cates will be heading up that division, and this month's prayer letter is her update as of January 2011.

I'd like to start off by asking you to take a look at a song by pop singer Katy Perry, called "Teenage Dream", if you haven't already heard the lyrics. You can find them at: http://www.metrolyrics.com/teenage-dream-lyrics-katy-perry.html

It's such a catchy tune, but if you listen to and read the lyrics carefully, this is the message that our teens, especially the girls, are being fed every day! In doing a little research, Perry also wrote lyrics to a song called "Hook Up", which actually declares that she doesn't "hook up", but she wants to take it slow. What a mixed message being sent to our kids! Another song that catapulted her into stardom was her song, "I Kissed a Girl". Yes, it's about a bi-sexual experience, but yet she says she "doesn't hook up."

Now...would it surprise you to learn that Katy Perry is the daughter of two ministers and originally started her music career singing gospel music in her parents' church and recording some gospel albums that failed miserably?

In writing a bible study to promote not only sexual purity, but how to truly love the Lord and know Him as your "First Love", I get pretty discouraged when faced with all the hyper-sexual media that has a daily influence on our culture. Many times it seems like a losing battle.

Please pray for me not to grow weary in doing good, trusting that at the proper time, we'll reap a harvest. I need these kinds of prayers daily as I seek to be obedient to write.

Here is where I find my encouragement and ask you to be encouraged and to continue to pray. As I contemplate on the effects of the "First Love" bible study, the Lord reminds me of two scriptures.

Hosea 4:6(a) "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." NASB

You see, many teens of this generation are being "destroyed" spiritually because they lack the knowledge of God's Word. They simply don't know what it says.

The second problem is this:
Proverbs 29:18 "Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained," NASB

I like how the NLT puts it, great teen terminology! "When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild."

Yes, our teens are running wild, even the Christian teens, many of whom HAVE the knowledge. Knowing what God's Word says is only the first part, the second is that they must have a vision cast before them to follow. They must "see" there is a goal to reach, a dream to attain to.

The Lord stirred up my heart when He reminded me of these passages and gave me a vision to be faithful to complete this study, because it reminded me of something that happened in the Old Testament. In 2 Kings Chapter 22 when Josiah becomes king, the Book of the Law is found (it had been lost). After many years of not being read, studied and practiced by the people, it is read to the king. Immediately, the king is convicted and repentant. He then says something very profound:

2 Kings 22:13 "Go, inquire of the Lord for me and the people and all Judah concerning the words of this book that has been found, for great is the wrath of the Lord that burns against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us."

I believe our culture, our nation, our generation of teens and children is greatly suffering God's wrath BECAUSE WE have not listened to the words of God's Book to DO according to what is written CONCERNING us.

I believe with all my heart, God wants us to teach our children, our teens, His Word concerning them, their world, their reaction to this world and their relationship to the One who made them. AND if we are faithful to cast a vision for loving God with their whole heart, soul, mind and strength, they will begin to prosper spiritually.

Oh friends, I hope I've not shared too much, but just enough for you to catch the vision with me. If we do not do something to reach this generation with the Word of God, the corruption is going to continue to trickle down faster and faster to our very youngest child. It's already started...some of you know that Katy Perry shot footage for a Sesame Street episode. It was pulled, because a party of parents stood up and said, "NO!" Praise the Lord. But you can still see it on the internet. She is dressed very provocatively and it was supposed to be viewed by our pre-schoolers!
