Dear Friend,
It has been nearly three years since Healing Hearts first went to Kampala, Uganda. Sue Sanford and Camille Cates were a team of two that spent eleven days of ministry in both Kampala, the capital, and a new area of ministry, the city of Jinja. Thank you for joining hands with us by your many prayers and donations which made this trip possible. They will share about their recent trip in this month's newsletter.
Healing Hearts Missions Trip to Uganda 2010
Our first event was a women's conference held at The Comforter's Center, a Pregnancy Resource Center and ministry partner of Healing Hearts. The Center has been using Binding up the Brokenhearted for their post-abortion counseling since shortly after they opened in 2006. Approximately 40 women were in attendance for the conference where we shared our personal testimonies of abortion and how the bible study changed our lives. God was so wonderful to return to us with good measure much more than what we were able to give. After sharing our testimonies, we received 20 similar stories from these women who have survived tremendous hurt and pain, not only due to abortion, but also those who have suffered domestic violence and turbulent family issues. The Monday just after our weekend conference, the Comforter's Center staff was receiving phone calls of people wanting to sign up to go through Binding up the Brokenhearted. We also provided the center with copies of The Hem of His Garment, as not all the women in attendance were post-abortive.
When we discovered that they did not have copies of The Wounded Warrior, we gave them copies of this bible study for post-abortive men as well.
On Monday, we spent time with the staff of the Comforter's Center and took them to lunch. God had given us a word of encouragement to share with the director: to expand the ministry of the Comforter's Center to other areas in Kampala. She shared with us that she had been up late the night before sensing the Lord was telling her to do that very thing. We have discovered she has since made plans to organize a conference within the next year to show others how to duplicate the wonderful ministry they are doing at the Comforter's Center and so expand pregnancy care in Kampala, including post-abortion counseling with Healing Hearts Ministries into other areas. She's praying for approximately 120 people to attend the conference.
A small training of seven leaders (all women) was held on Tuesday at the Comforter's Center. Three of the women in attendance had completed Binding up the Brokenhearted and were encouraged to use biblical precepts in counseling women that attend their bible study groups.
We gave them two copies of Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands, by Paul Tripp and taught briefly from the book on how to address idolatries of the heart and not just treat spiritual symptoms that spring up from these “heart idolsâ€. After speaking further with the leaders at the Comforter's Center, we believe it would be beneficial on a return mission trip to hold seminars in each of the leader's churches to help them introduce Healing Hearts Ministries to other women in their church.
Sue and I became good friends with Madinah, our translator for the women's conference. Coming out of the Muslim faith, Madinah's devotion to the Lord Jesus is contagious and powerful. She has a passion for God's Word that is clearly seen in her speech and behavior. It was her desire that we would be willing to come to her predominantly Muslim community and share our faith in Christ with her unbelieving friends and family. She has done a phenomenal job of laying the foundation of the gospel and planting the seeds. We believe that as her small, modest home was filled to the brim with people, including the door way, those seeds were watered with the Word of God and our testimonies of His power as we shared with her neighbors for nearly 2 hours. Our time in her home became a deep dialogue back and forth with many questions, as the Spirit was present to share with seeking hearts. One lady asked for prayer to become grounded in Christ and another asked for prayer that her Muslim husband would accept her belief in this message and her faith in Christ.
The city of Jinja was our next stop for ministry. While we only spent two days in this beautiful part of Uganda, which is the source of the Nile River, we were able to present the ministry to local missionary and ministry leaders at an informal tea. Several of the ladies expressed an interest in going through The Hem of His Garment not only for their personal healing, but to possibly lead future Healing Hearts groups in Jinja.
Our last significant day of ministry was a small pastor's meeting held at the Comforter's Center. Around seventeen pastors and ministry leaders were in attendance. While we originally thought we were going to encourage pastors to extend grace to hurting women in their congregations so that they may attend Healing Hearts bible studies and be willing to hold future bible study groups in their churches, the meeting soon turned to their own personal need for healing. The Holy Spirit's presence and power were very evident as we began to share about the Wounded Warrior and how God's desire is to raise up godly men and shepherds to lead His people, but how oftentimes the shepherds are battle weary and become wounded by their own sin or the sin of others. It had been my prayer that God would grab the heart of at least one man to step forward and take on the ministry of Wounded Warrior. He indeed called out such a man, right before our eyes! A pastor stood up and called the men to be “doers†of what they had just heard. He quickly and effectively organized those who wanted to attend a Wounded Warrior bible study. Eight men signed up for the study. We have kept in contact with the pastor since returning home. He shared with us that both he and his wife, who also attended the meeting, are post-abortive. They are both currently going through the online studies for post-abortion, so that he can be better equipped as he leads these men, while receiving his own healing.
We made several other contacts of godly church leaders who now have the bible studies to work through and then hope to lead them in their own churches. The Comforter's Center has translated Binding up the Brokenhearted into Luganda and we have brought a copy home with us.
We praise God for all the wonderful works He accomplished on this trip. It's truly exciting to see Him spreading the work of the ministry that is so dear to our hearts so that the nations may see His righteousness and worship the God who is our Healer. Please pray for continued fruit from our mission to the precious people of Uganda.
In Christ,
Camille Cates, Uganda Mission Team Leader
