Dear Friend,
Setting out to climb a mountain is a massive undertaking.
It’s certainly not something you do on a whim. You need a plan, a map to guide you through the safest passage to avoid the inherent perils and pitfalls along the way. And, if you’ve never endeavored to complete this journey before, wouldn’t it be a welcome relief if you could lean on an experienced climber, someone who’s walked this same trail before, to lead the way?
There’s a helpful metaphor in all this for how Healing Hearts Ministries operates its mission to help the brokenhearted and weary overcome some of life’s biggest mountains.
The truth is, whether we can see it or not, people all around us are living under the shadow of mountains of guilt, shame, bitterness, and anger: The woman who chose abortion (perhaps years prior); the man who was molested as a child; the individual trapped in a vicious cycle of abusive behavior or relationships—these are all life-altering events that send eruptions of pain which now dominate their soul’s horizon.
They may keep it a secret and do their best to pretend it’s not there, but that doesn’t stop the pain from hovering ominously in the periphery of their heart and mind, never allowing painful memories to be forgotten, casting long shadows over each day and every relationship. Instinctively, those who suffer beneath these mountains know that until they can climb over whatever massive, life-dominating issues tower over them, they will never truly be free.
But to climb over such a daunting mountain requires facing enormous obstacles in the fearful “what-ifs” that bar the way: What if people discover what I’ve done—or what was done to me? Would they reject me? What if I can’t bear to look at my guilt or shame and am crushed by it? What if I make my life even worse for trying to overcome my past? What if I can’t forgive or reconcile with my oppressors? What if God can’t forgive or reconcile with me? Isn’t it easier to just stay where I am and try to accept what my life is? I can’t move that mountain and I dare not try to go over it alone.
Praise the Lord that we are not left alone in our despair and helplessness! There is a help that comes from the Lord, the maker of even the highest of mountains. Is there anything too big for Him?
Isaiah chapter 61 tells us that the Lord sent a Redeemer “to bind up the brokenhearted.” The good news of the Gospel is that Jesus redeems! For the last 30 years, Healing Hearts Ministries has been seeking to faithfully carry out Christ’s merciful mission of redemption to those broken by sin. Over and over again we’ve witnessed how God has blessed the discipleship model embraced at our core: As God sets hurting men and women free from their past, Healing Hearts equips them to go and do likewise, providing training, mentorship, and support to help them reach out to others with the hope and healing they found in Jesus.
We are thankful for the tools with which God has equipped us for this ministry:
The Map – God’s Word is the ultimate trail map to guide us to overcoming our sin and despair. Healing Hearts’ Bible studies simply help unfold that map, identifying waypoints and pitfalls specific to each heart.
Trail Guides – Many of those healed through the studies discover that God redemptively calls them to serve as trail guides(Healing Hearts Certified Counselors) for others—compassionate companions to help carry their burdens and guide them safely up and over their mountains to hope and freedom in Christ.
Basecamps – As we plant the ministry of Healing Hearts in local churches, we are establishing basecamps to welcome in the lost and weary so as to connect them to a “trail guide”(counselor) who can lead them through our online and group Bible studies.
Supply Tent – Our Healing Hearts office staff (pictured right) works to keep the ministry’s supply tent stocked with everything our “trail guides” will need to maintain a healthy “basecamp” at their church for reaching the brokenhearted and leading our studies. Their role includes developing publications, shipping materials, and providing training, web tools, and support.
Guideposts – That’s you! Whenever you tell someone about Healing Hearts, you are helping us plant a guidepost for them to know that there is a way to overcome the mountains of sin or past afflictions in life… and that they don’t have to do it alone.
Lifelines – The rescue missions Healing Hearts performs each and every day as our certified counselors minister to peoples’ souls simply does not happen without your prayers and support. You are our lifeline as we carry out the mission! Every dollar you donate is supplying us with the means to keep the “basecamps” running and the “supply tents” full. Every time you lift us up in prayer, you are strengthening our feet to go carry the Gospel to a desperate world.
Thank you for sending us out to the brokenhearted. Together, we are moving mountains, just like Jenny’s…
“My life was filled with pain and heartache. By the time I was 21 I had made three very poor, life-changing choices – abortion, and using drugs and alcohol to numb my pain. I was living under a mountain of guilt, shame, anger, depression, and self-destruction. I was trying to find significance and happiness in men. A counselor told me that God could take away my pain and forgive my guilt. At age 32 my marriage was failing and I wanted to end my life. I decided to see if God could live up to this promise. Not only did Jesus take away my pain, guilt, shame, and anger, but He has restored my marriage and shown me that happiness can only be found in Him. I found that no amount of alcohol or drugs will take away my pain and no one person apart from Jesus can solve my problems or make me happy. Now, my purpose and significance in life come from sharing this hope and healing with others.”
