Dear Friend,
As we celebrate Healing Hearts’ 30 years of ministry, I can’t help but reflect back on the ways God has faithfully led me to this point, and how he has blessed and grown this ministry.
On March 18, 1972, I walked into a New York abortion clinic and aborted the only baby I would ever conceive. For the next 10 years I lived in a prison built by my own hands. As is the case with many women who have experienced an abortion, my life spiraled downward and seemed hopeless.
In 1982, after living a lifestyle of depravity, including occult involvement, I found the only True Hope in this world, Jesus Christ. When Jesus came into my life I was instantly and drastically changed. I was hungry for truth and I studied and grew in my faith. As I studied God’s Word the healing process began. Although the abortion was my deepest hurt, God mended my broken heart and healed all of my wounds.
Seeking help from disengaged churches and the pro-life movement and scouring Christian bookstores, I found them all lacking in identifying the one thing that would bind up my broken heart―the gospel of Jesus Christ. I saw angry women protesting and picketing abortion clinics trying to make a difference, but the reality was they were broken and needed healing. I knew there were millions of women out there that were just like me and the only answer for their weary souls was the Gospel. Under the powerful conviction of the Holy Spirit, I began to write Binding Up the Brokenhearted, a gospel-centered and grace-driven Bible study that would help other women find hope and healing through Jesus and the sufficiency of the Word of God.
As I reached out to minister to women, a few other post-abortive women (Teresa Rinker, Susie Alicandro, Madge Bloom & Diana Shires) joined me, and in 1988 Healing Hearts Ministries was launched. God opened a door for me to have a daily radio program on KGNW radio in Seattle, Washington. It wasn’t long until we had waiting lists of women who were seeking help. Women were being set free and wanting to give back, so using Jay Adams’ book “Competent to Counsel,” I started training former clients to become Healing Hearts leaders. Eventually ministry and training became overwhelming, so God gifted me with Judy Hansen, who developed our training program.
After seeing what my baby’s father had gone through, my heart was heavy for the fathers of aborted babies. I knew they needed help as well, so with the help of Dan DeVries, an elder at my church, and Alan Van Boven, our first men’s group was formed and The Wounded Warrior (now Restoring a Father’s Heart) bible study was written.
With the development of the internet and a Healing Hearts web page, the ministry started to grow nationwide. We began to minister to women online, which led to the development of an e-ministry that now ministers to people all over the world. National conferences were formed for ongoing training and discipleship.
In 2001, we began to realize that as our trained leaders were sharing their testimonies in churches and women’s ministry groups, women were coming forward who had not experienced abortion, but had other hurts. Responding to the need, I wrote The Hem of His Garment and Healing Hearts expanded into a broader discipleship ministry. Since that time, we have ministered to over 16,000 people and have 180 trained leaders in the US ministering in their church homes.
In 2008, I was approached by one of our leaders, Camille Cates, about writing a Bible study for young women to help them biblically address many of the issues they face each day. In 2013, we published First Love: Embracing a Love that Lasts. This year, we released a new companion study for young men, The Fight of Your Life: Living for God’s Glory.
We started our first mission in the Ukraine after translating our materials into Russian. After that came our Spanish translation, then our Luganda and Romanian translations. Healing Hearts materials are now being used in Argentina, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Cuba, Peru, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Uganda, Ukraine, and Zambia.
On October 25th, I'll be gathering alongside our ministry leaders to celebrate 30 years of faithful ministry at our annual conference! We are in awe of all that God has done―and we have only just begun. You have been an instrumental part of this great work through your prayers, donations, and support of this ministry in various ways.
This is why we want to invite you to join us in celebrating our 30th Anniversary.
First, praise the Lord along with us as Psalm 126:3 proclaims, “The LORD has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.” Second, we’d love to hear from you about how Healing Hearts has impacted your life as a supporter and/or client. Please write us at PO Box 44670, Rio Rancho, NM 87174 or send an email to 30years@healinghearts.org to share your memories, photos, or even words of encouragement. Or perhaps you might even consider giving a special donation in honor of this 30-year milestone.
| However you choose to celebrate, we want you to know how incredibly thankful we are for your on-going support and partnership in the Gospel.
To God be the glory now and forevermore,
Sue Liljenberg President/International Director |
