Dear Friend,
Earlier this year, on February 14, 2018, our nation was once again rocked by the tragedy of a school shooting, this time in Lakeland, Florida. The shocking headlines have begun to fade from many people’s minds, but for parents with children headed back to school, safety and security is always a concern.
Just this morning, I received a notice from my children’s school district announcing new security measures that they intend to have in place by the time school starts. The Lakeland shooting is still on their minds. School violence is one reason why some parents choose to homeschool. I have educated my own children through public schooling, then homeschooling, and now public schooling again. Their safety and their education is of utmost importance to me, too. Yet there is one thing that is even more important and actually quite relevant to their education and their interaction with peers.
My greatest role and responsibility as a parent is to teach and equip my children to love God with all of who they are and to love other people as God intended. This gets more and more challenging the older they get as life becomes increasingly complex for them.
Interestingly, when asked what was of greatest importance to God, Jesus answered similarly:
One of the teachers of the law…noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”
“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:28-31 (NIV)
Many parents are headed into this school year with legitimate concerns for their children’s safety. While they and community leaders may take great measures to keep them as safe and secure as possible, there’s more we can and should do. You can help equip parents to teach their children the two most important things—loving God and loving others.
Healing Hearts has spent the past decade writing and developing solid, biblical curriculum for parents, grandparents, and youth leaders to use in evangelizing and discipling this next generation through the toughest of battles that they are facing. Today’s culture and our children’s environment may seem intimidating to us, but God’s Word and Spirit still give us everything we need to overcome sin and glorify Christ in our daily lives.
If you share our vision for youth discipleship, we invite you to preview our Bible studies for young adults:
