Dear Friend,
Last fall I was looking for a place to lead a new group through The Hem of His Garment on Wednesday mornings. Two ladies had contacted me about joining but my church building was already booked.
That's when the Lord reminded me of the open invitation I had been extended by Next Chapter Ministries to use their Fellowship House any time I needed. This house is a special residential home for women who have been in jail or prison. Next Chapter also offers support for families of prisoners, programs for children and youth who have been impacted by crime, and ministry in the local juvenile detention center.
When I inquired about the availability of the Fellowship House, Roxy Zenker, the Women's Ministry Coordinator at Next Chapter, received my request with excitement at the possibility of offering this class to the women in her care.
Now, it's true that I never set out to do ministry in this type of venue. But God knew what He was doing. I would soon learn I needed this group just as much as they needed it.
Two ladies from Fellowship House joined our group along with Roxy, making us six ladies in all. I was blown away by the honesty, vulnerability, wonderful questions, and by the way God knitted the hearts of these ladies together as we studied The Hem of His Garment together. But nothing I can write will compare to the beauty of reading some of the testimonies from this group for yourself:
"This Bible study impacted my life by teaching me that I can be forgiving, and as kind as God is to us; that when there is emptiness, God is there. I learned that I can always pray and talk with Him and throughout the day and He will never leave me. His face, mercy, and love are more than I will ever need. I also learned to listen to God and not to this world... [and] that I will have eternal life in heaven with Jesus. I am forgiven and saved by my Savior." - Pam
"This study gave me immense freedom from flesh bondage. It showed me how to let go and how to see people through God's eyes. Learning the truth about the cross changed my life and set me free from self-bondage.. and the ties that kept me bound to ______. It showed me how selfish I was, thinking I needed to forgive myself. Christ was crucified for that and I do not need to forgive myself. God already has, and He is the ultimate forgiver." - Sandra
"This study was very healing and deep. Not only did it help me face my core hurts, but it allowed me to view them and bring them out in a healthy environment. I learned how to be okay with forgiving others... [as well as] how to let go of the hurts some people have caused me in life. I learned that I was holding onto things that I had no idea I still was angry about. I also learned that I am okay being me.
"All of these realizations came because this group glorifies God and the power He has to take our pain from us. Getting to know God in this group was the most meaningful thing to me. By knowing Him, I also know that I can trust Him and let Him take away the hurts caused by others, as well as hurts I have caused.
"Julie Bashore led this group and did a wonderful job facilitating. She displayed a safe and trusting atmosphere and wow! I've never seen women open up the way our group did. This growth I experienced was so personal and intimate. It's very hard to explain to someone what you may experience yourself. I believe God has a hand in every attender's life and only He knows what to give you so you may also grow and heal.
"I would recommend this group to anyone who wants to live their life without carrying heavy burdens. If you desire to be at peace and live life as God intends for you-content, full of joy, loved, and an empowered Christian and follower of Christ-this group is well worth the effort and time.
"Thank you, God, for this opportunity and growth. . . and, Julie, thanks for being a courageous woman!"
- Roxy Zenker, Next Chapter Ministries Women's Ministry Coordinator
I'm pleased to say we have just completed a second group at Next Chapter Ministries and this has led to meetings with the Department of Corrections about the possibility of coordinating groups within the jail. We've also been asked to have a group at a women's residential addiction treatment facility.
It is such a joy to be living out the mission God has called all of us to follow in Isaiah 61:1-4:
"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me, to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to prisoners. . ."
PLEASE PRAY WITH US that God will bless and grow this unique ministry partnership with Next Chapter Ministries; for the good work at Next Chapter and the Fellowship House to continue; for open eyes and open hearts to follow God wherever he leads us to minister; that we would faithfully lead women like Sandra, Pam, and Roxy to true freedom in Christ - all for God's glory!
PRAISE GOD WITH US! We are 92% of the way to funding our Printer Replacement project. Thank you!
Thank you for making our ministry to women like Sandra, Pam and Roxy a priority in your life through your continued prayer and financial support. Every donation, small or large, is priceless to the Lord. If you have not already, would you consider joining us as a monthly donor at $10, $25, $50 or more?
I can't wait to see what God will do next as we serve in this ministry together.
In Christ,
Julie Bashore Mid-North Regional Director |
