Dear Friend,
In June I shared with you a story about a young Christian couple who had an abortion in Bible College, how it affected their lives and how they found healing. We seem to forget that Christians sitting in our churches are suffering in silence - often whole families. How can we reach the world if we don't reach the church?
Allow me to share the story of one such family as told by their Healing Hearts counselor, Madelyn:
I remember when I first met Denise. It was on a Thursday morning and she was a visitor to our women's bible study. I had been in that bible study for twelve years and had never ministered to anyone in our group who had an abortion. This was a divine appointment. I remember Denise saying, "Abortion can't continue in my family, we have had enough, it has to stop, this whole lie, it can't continue." She wanted to be healed and she wanted her family healed.
I had no idea what this journey was going to be like. You see, Denise is a Bible teacher, a public speaker and is a leader in her community. She knows the Word of God and she loves God with all her heart. How was I going to teach her anything that she did not already know?
Shortly after we met she joined our Healing Hearts "Binding up the Brokenhearted" bible study group. She was so wounded, and angry. She did not know why she was so angry and she didn't expect the unearthing of all the emotions that she would experience as she worked through the study. She told me that she was so angry that she wanted to hit me that first night.
There were gaps in her knowledge of God. She knew that there was a lot of brokenness in her life, and in her family. She knew that hurting people hurt other people. She realized that these abortion wounds were much bigger than she realized. She knew she wasn't in a good place. Because she was a Bible teacher, when she heard that we use the Word of God in the class - using a biblical standard/foundation for healing - she was ready to turn to God's word for healing.
Denise wrote:There was strife, division, and stress in my marriage. We loved each other but we certainly weren't treating each other with love. We didn't know how to love. I don't think you can love until you are healed. We were both wounded people wounding one another... I was very much saved, but I did not trust God and was very religious in some of my thinking! I thought to myself 'If God is a loving God. Why? Why? He should have kept me from getting raped.' When you don't trust God and you listen to the enemy's words like Eve did in the garden you remain in bondage. The enemy tries to convince you that you can't trust God and you need to listen to what he is saying as opposed to what God is saying. We inherit this horrible distrust of God from Adam and Eve."
Denise suggested her husband take the "Wounded Warrior" study online because he had past relationships where his babies had been aborted. So he believed the lie as well. Denise was on a quest to get her family healed from the destruction of abortion. Her daughter signed up online to go through "The Hem of His Garment" because she also needed healing. We found out later that she too had believed the lie and had abortions in her past. We had a mother, a father and a daughter all taking one of our bible studies at the same time.
As Denise studied God's Word she learned that there was no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. She learned what it was like to really trust God. She said, "I did not encounter a non-condemning God until I entered that class. As I looked into the faces of my counselors all I saw was love and forgiveness. Is this what it is supposed to be like? Is that what real Christians sound and act like? It was in this study that I learned the whole truth about forgiveness especially the concept of not being able to forgive myself. This was a wonderful revelation. This was an "ah- ha" moment for me. I have since taught that truth to others. The unbiblical concept of self-forgiveness has been taught church wide. Most of the people that I have shared this with are just as surprised as I was. It is a very liberating biblical truth. It moves me and self-righteousness out of the way. If you can forgive yourself you don't need a savior. I was surprised that I didn't understand that earlier. It has now become part of my life - I have never let go of that revelation."
There is so much more to this family's story and maybe we will share more another time. I want to share one more quote from Denise: "Healing Hearts has been directed by God to stop the vicious cycle of hurting people hurting other people." When I think of Denise I just smile because I knew what was in store for her but only God knew what was in store for her whole family.
With your support, we truly are 'Healing Hearts, healing families, one heart at a time'!
PLEASE PRAY WITH US: for more families, like the Edwards, to find hope and restoration; that God would stop the destructive cycle of pain caused from abortion within families; for more Healing Hearts leaders to be raised up to faithfully minister; for safe travel, effective training and encouragement for our new and current leaders at our National Conference in Dallas, October 21-25th.
Right now, there are families sitting in our churches just like Denise and Ron who need healing from the past sin of abortion. God has given us a big job to do and we need your help. Help us reach out and minister to these families with a one-time or monthly gift of $25, $50, $100 or more. You can make an eternal difference for families like the one in this story!
Thank you for standing with Healing Hearts Ministries as we bring the good news to the brokenhearted.
