Dear Friend,
Sunday, January 18th is "National Sanctity of Human Life Day". What a wonderful opportunity for each of us to speak life into one of the deadliest social issues in history, abortion.
But, complacency is tempting...
After 42 years of legalized abortion, it is admittedly tempting to let abortion just run the course of other social issues that have been culturally accepted. Is there anything new here? The "Roe v Wade" ruling still hasn't been overturned. Doesn't the cause of abortion seem to march defiantly on, whether or not we take a stand?
Traditional (surgical) abortion rates may be on decline (Guttmacher.org), but that doesn't mean abortion is fading into the background of social culture. The rise of telemedicine abortion (helping women 'safely and effectively' obtain a medical abortion without a physician present) and the over-the-counter availability of the 'morning-after' pill mask the cruel reality: our rebellion against God is still alive and strong - finding new ways to hide, normalize or repress our shame.
That is exactly the message we see so vividly played out in the recent viral video produced by 25-year old Emily Letts. An abortion counselor at the Cherry Hill Women's Center in New Jersey, Emily recorded her own abortion procedure in an effort to help other women not feel so guilty when making their decision. At the end of her video, Emily declared "I don't feel sad. I feel in awe of the fact that I can make a baby. I can make a life. I knew that what I was going to do [in having the abortion] was right, 'cause it was right for me and no one else."
Carter Eskew of The Washington Post hailed Emily Letts "brave actions" by saying, "For too long, those who believe in abortion rights have been playing defense, hiding behind political locutions like 'safe, legal and rare.' The procedure itself may have come out of the back alleys, but the affirmative case for abortion, the necessary and positive impact it has had on millions of women's lives who weren't ready, able or desirous of having a child, has been in a shroud of shame. With her brave actions, Letts lifted it a bit."
Sadly, what these proponents have failed to see or acknowledge is that the true after-effects of abortion (often manifesting years later) are hidden and often blamed on everything else except the abortion.
The fact that nearly 45% of women in the U.S. will have an abortion by age 45, means that there are exponentially more suffering marriages, fathers, mothers, siblings, providers, grandparents, and friends affected by the aftermath of the decision to abort.
It's all too easy to get discouraged when allowing ourselves to look honestly at the destructive path our society has consistently chosen.
But, praise God He is not complacent with our demise!
Healing Hearts Ministries has been entrusted with the critical message of Christ's hope and healing with which we can compassionately restore individuals broken by the sin of abortion back to Him... and by doing so, to help restore families and marriages for His glory. Considering the widespread numbers of those effected, it is not a stretch to see post-abortive men and women as one of the largest mission fields in the history of America! We are so honored to know you stand with us in this mission.
As mentioned at the start of this letter, Sunday January 18th will be the thirtieth "National Sanctity of Human Life Day". This third Sunday of the month was first established in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan to coincide with the original January 22nd date of "Roe v. Wade" Supreme Court case.
I urge you to participate in "Sanctity of Life" events with your church and community during this month. Visit our website, www.HealingHearts.org/sanctity-of-life for ideas on how you can help promote the life-giving work of Healing Hearts Ministries. You'll find videos and resources to share with your church or on social media.
As we begin a new year of ministry, your financial support remains a critical piece of our ability to reach the hurting hearts of our nation. Please consider becoming a regular monthly donor. It is amazing what a monthly gift of $25, $50 or more can accomplish. Thank you for joining us in this critical mission.
In closing, let me leave you with Paul's encouragement to the Galatians, "And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9 ESV) How fitting that the phrase translated "give up" was used to describe the kind of fear and weariness a woman experiences during labor but before delivery - a time when the work is hard and painful, but also unfinished and unrewarded. It's easy to lose heart when we feel like that, but that is exactly when we must hang on and not grow weary while doing good!
In Jesus` Love,
