Ron and Shelly Brush’s Walk for Freedom
Hello! Our names are Ron and Shelly Brush, we both are growing in our walk with Jesus, our Lord and Savior, as we have a strong desire to follow Him. First Southern Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, is our church family that we grow and serve in. Ron and I became leaders in Healing Hearts Ministries after we took one of the studies. Healing Hearts ministered to my heart in 2021 through the Bible study called Binding Up The Brokenhearted. This study is written specifically for women who experienced abortion. This study used the Word of God my heart desperately needed. God had been working in my heart for a few years prior to this time, through various sermons by my Pastor, Doyle Pryor, and training events, and a small group Bible study at our church. During the Binding Up The Brokenhearted Bible study, I trusted what God’s Word said about forgiveness, even my abortion. As I truly believed Him by faith, 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, AND cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It occurred to me during this study that I was crying out to God and confessing my abortion; but I didn’t trust Him to forgive me, after all “I couldn’t forgive myself”. The study brings out that the Bible never mentions forgiving ourselves; but to repent and confess our sins to Him and then trust Him for forgiveness. Something the study helped me see is that God’s forgiveness didn’t excuse my sin of taking the life of my child through “abortion”; He condemned it and it broke His heart; “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” Ephesians 2:4-5. The moment I believed, I received His forgiveness and was healed. I also learned the difference between consequences and punishment; although I still have consequences of my sins; I no longer have to fear His punishment, because Jesus paid my “fine” in full. That is what it meant when Jesus said, “it is finished” when He died on the cross. I now am privileged to lead women through the Bible study that gave me His truth of my sin and then His peace and comfort as I trusted fully in His forgiveness. I know God called me to comfort others as I have been comforted.
Ron took the study called The Good Fight in 2022. This study was written to help men overcome past and present struggles; such as loss, pornography, abuse, divorce, addictions, or other traumas. This study helped Ron heal from the hurt, anger, and substance abuse in his past and present life. This study keeps the focus on God’s grace through Jesus Christ. We are all broken by sin and God can help us through these problems. We cannot fix ourselves or forgive ourselves; He (God) is the only One who can fix us and forgive us. Proverbs 27:17 says that “iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” All men go through things that can bring us down; but God, can restore us if we truly let Him through having another man to give us accountability and sharpen us through Christ. Ron is now privileged to walk other men through the Word of God through this study, The Good Fight.

I remember the day when God called me out to confess my sin of abortion to those who had a big impact on my life as a Christ follower. In 2021, God spoke clearly to my heart with James 5:16, "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The urgent request of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect." I met Tom and Brenda at their home and shared my story. I wasn't sure if they would change their posture toward me; but I wanted to obey God in this area of my life. I was met by grace from them and more healing in my heart took place that day. I remember vividly Tom's response after I shared with them. He told me that it sounds like God is going to open up a ministry to be used by Him. I didn't know that God would use Healing Hearts Ministries to allow me to serve other women at that time. Now, Ron, is serving men. The training and support we have received through Healing Hearts Ministries has been a blessing to us and has equipped us to bless others with the Word of God. It is so encouraging to look back and see God's faithfulness in our lives. He is a God who desires to forgive and restore our lives, to heal us, so we can get up and help restore others brought low by sin.
